Some celebrities appear to love their lives in the public eye - where would a member of the Kardashian Klan be without a camera crew following them around? It would be like losing an arm or a leg!
But not all stars enjoy the trappings of fame and some try to get a sense of normality back by shying away from the limelight.
And Mischa Barton, 27, admits she is one of those famous folk saying she wouldn't wish her life as a celebrity on anyone.
The star, who became well known for her role in hit American television show The O.C., has appeared in films since the age of 11 but has also experienced the darker side of fame when she hit headlines for driving under the influence in 2007 and when she was sectioned in 2009.
Referring to her time on The O.C., she told Look magazine: "I don't think I was quite ready. We had no private lives and were followed mercilessly.
"It's tough to have every moment of your life documented and never be allowed down time. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
"I feel like people are still harping on about things that happened to me ages ago - for some reason they're still fascinated by it. But it's like night and day for me - I'm a completely different person."
But Mischa is now more comfortable with her life and prefers to spend her time between London in good old Blighty with her family and her British actor boyfriend Sebastian Knapp and her home in Los Angeles.
She said: "I've grown up. I feel confident in myself again these days. I've become smarter over the years - I stay out of the public eye and go out in Hollywood once in a blue moon.
"I like to go to the pub for Sunday lunch with my family. It's things like that I value the most when I'm in London. My sister Zoe just had a baby so I see her and we mainly walk our basset hound in Hyde Park."
