Whitney Houston FBI files: Singer paid off letter-writer who threatened to reveal intimate secrets

The FBI has released a 128-page record on the late singer Whitney Houston, including details of an alleged extortion attempt.

In November 1992 a lawyer for an unidentified woman sent a letter to Houston and her father, threatening to spill the beans on her love life unless she paid £66,000.

The figure was later upped £165,000 and the Houstons called in agents the FBI.

A memo dated December 15, 1992 said a special agent questioned the lawyer, who said her client “has knowledge of intimate details regarding Whitney Houston’s romantic relationships, and will go public with the information,” unless she was paid.

She offered to sign a confidentiality agreement in return.

The memo says Houston, who drowned in a hotel bath in February last year, aged 48, admitted she had discussed “personal things” with the woman but insisted she had not been threatened and that the woman had told her she would never do anything to embarrass her.

Surprisingly, the Houstons paid up, and a copy of the confidentiality agreement was attached to the file, though the sum paid was not revealed.

Authorities ruled that the letter was not a violation of federal law and closed the case.

The files also included bizarre fan mail, including some from an unidentified man who said he planned to contact the media “to make his love for Houston public.”

An agent who interviewed the man described his as a “loner” who was “obsessed with Whitney Houston,” but had no intention of threatening or harming her.

He promised to stop writing and there was no prosecution.

Other letters came from a crazed Dutch fan who claimed to be “President of Europe” and claimed to have bought Brazil.

The letters were threatening and he also including tapes of songs her had written for her.

Again, he was interviewed, this time told his actions were against US law and he promised to stop writing.
