Channel 4 announce One Direction documentary celebrating fans' social media devotion, but could legions of Directioners close down their Twitter accounts?

Teenage girls across Britain could soon be locking their Twitter accounts to ward off mum and dad’s prying eyes after Channel 4 announced a One Direction documentary will look at how fans interact with their idols on social media.

The one-off Cutting Edge special called ‘I Heart One Direction’ is due to air this summer and hopes to get under the skin of the boy band’s biggest and most passionate young fans to find out what it means to be a true Directioner.

But could some of the band's more excitable fans close down their networks if their parents come to realise just how hysterical they can be? They can get a little on the skittish side, after all.

Executive producer Tayte Simpson said: “Social media has created huge comm unities which connect millions of fans in a way that was never possible before.

“One Direction’s use of social media to diarise their inner thoughts gives fans a sense of intimacy and ownership, fuelling strong emotions.”

Since being put together for X Factor, One Direction has become the biggest pop phenomenon since The Beatles.

Band members Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik have over 10 million followers on Twitter and were the first British group to ever enter the US Billboard chart at Number 1 with their debut album.
