Brad Pitt is considered to be one of the biggest Hollywood stars on the planet and rarely offers an insight into his private life.
But in a new interview with US Esquire the 49-year-old reveals how extensive drug use turned him into a "drifter".
He confesses: "For a long time I thought I did too much damage - drug damage. I was a bit of a drifter."
Brad describes himself as "a guy who felt he grew up in something of a vacuum and wanted to see things, wanted to be inspired. I followed that other thing. I spent years f***ing off.
"But then I got burnt out and felt that I was wasting my opportunity."
In a rare reflection on his personal life, Brad explains how ten years ago - you know, just after signing up to film Mr Mrs Smith - his whole world changed.
"It was a conscious change. This was about a decade ago. It was an epiphany - a decision not to squander my opportunities," he told the magazine.
"It was a feeling of get up. Because otherwise, what's the point?"
Those more cynical might see that decision to leave a life with Jen and go and have a future with fiancée Angelina Jolie..
Of course this isn't the first time he's suggested his marriage to the Friends star was on the rubbish side.
In 2011, he told Parade magazine that he spent much of the nineties "sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out. I think that my marriage had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't."
Ouch.
Then just when you thought Jen had probably had enough of a slating, Jean Black - Brad Pitt's make up artist - gets involved, saying Angelina was able to "unleash" Brad's full potential.
"I think Brad was ready to soar when he met Angie," she says.
"This is not to say anything negative about Jennifer. I was part of that and I know that he and Jen are very good friends and he cared deeply for her.
"In Angie he saw a very adventurous person who was grabbing onto life and taking it to it's nth degree. It was intriguing as I felt Brad had that in him and wanted to unleash it."
We're guessing she's lost at least one client and doesn't do Jennifer's make up any more.
Brad made his feelings clear and moved on to talking about how happy he is now with Angelina and their six children.
"I have very few friends. I have a handful of close friends and I have my family and I haven't known life to be any happier.
"There's constant chatter in our house, whether it's giggling or screaming or crying or banging. I love it. I love it. I love it. I hate it when they're gone. I hate it.
"Maybe it's nice to be in a hotel room for a day - 'Oh, nice, I can finally read a paper.' But then, by the next day, I miss that cacophony, all that life."
Still, it is nice to hear Brad sharing his feelings for Ange, given the tough few months they've had.
Last week Angelina revealed that she'd undergone a preventative double mastectomy after discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene which dramatically increases a woman's risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
The actress made her brave statement in the New York Times, saying: âI am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience.
"Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into peopleâs hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.â
Brad has spoken out about how proud he is of Angelina for going through the treatment.
He said: "Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic.
"All I want is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family."
The full interview is in the June/July issue of US Esquire, out now.
