If you can't get Bill Murray, then Guttenberg's your man.
This was the saying that (may, possibly, probably) echoed around Hollywood during the 1980s. And while Murray has gone on to become a true comedy legend who casting directors still clamour over each other to sign up today, Guttenberg's status remains 'cult'.
What happened to the fortunes of the curly-haired, dead-panning New Yorker who starred in classic film franchisees Police Academy, Three Men A Baby and Cocoon throughout the 80s and early 90s?
As he turns 55 we look again at the man, the myth, the hairy-chested Adonis and try to justify in 15 steps just why Gutt's a great actor and a great man.
1. He clearly knows a stinker when he sees one. Or maybe not. No only did Guttenberg turn down the lead role of Josh in 1988's Big - a role that went to Tom Hanks in a film that was hugely success ful - but he also rejected the role of Dr. Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters. Bill Murray happily accepted it and the rest is history.
2. In fairness to him Guttenberg turned down the Ghostbusters job in favour of playing Carey Mahoney in Police Academy. He went on to star in four Police Academy films - arguably the best four - and plans to star in or direct the next Police Academy film.
3. Here he is at his best in the Police Academy movies.
Â
4. And while we're at it, here's that rap from Three Men A Little Lady.
Â
5. He's celebrated in The Simpsons - is there a higher form of validation for a comedy actor that that? In the sixth season of the show Guttenberg is named checked in the Stonecutters Song. "Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star? We do! We do!,â sing the Stonecutters. Have a listen here: Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Â
6. If being given the nod by The Simpsons wasn't enough, Gutt was honoured by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 2011 when he received the 2,455th star on the Hollywood Walk of fame. He's the meat in a Shakira and Boyz II Men sandwich. Tasty!
7. But he doesn't just take, Guttenberg is a philanthropist and does much work for charity including his work with the Guttenhouse Project which provides housing in Los Angeles for at-risk foster care youth when they turn 18 and have nowhere else to go.
8. Has was also behind a campaign to provide glasses for poor children whose families cannot afford eye care, and following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 he spent a week volunteering at the Houston Astrodome.
9. âIf you're an underdog, mentally disabled, physically disabled, if you don't fit in, if you're not as pretty as the others, you can still be a hero,â says Gutt. He really is a champion of the people.
10. Despite his lack of blockbuster movies sin ce the early 90s, Guttenberg's not bitter and is the first to send himself up. Here he is in a bizarre clip about 'Gutenberg The Musical!'.            Â
Â
11. He is the resurrection. Earlier this month Steve Guttenberg was the subject of an online death hoax. It was claimed that the actor had passed away, and an 'RIP Steve Guttenberg' Facebook page was created which quickly attracted more than one million 'likes'. This isn't the first Guttenberg death hoax, it has previously been claimed that he died in Austria and in New Zealand while filming on mountain tops.
12. Back in 2008 Gutt was a guest on Chris Moyles' Radio 1 breakfast show. He played live Guess Who with Comedy Dave, putting on a variety of bizarre voices. Check it out in all its hilarity here.
Â
13. Guttenberg has appeared in Dancing With The Stars in the States. Here he is doing a foxtrot with Anya Trebunskaya.
Â
14. Shortly after he stunned America with his dance moves, he was filmed jogging through Central Park naked from the waist down. Take a peek here, thankfully all the gory bits have been pixelated.
Â
15. Filmmaker and comedian Kevin Smith and his producing partner Scott Mosier discuss just how great Steve Guttenberg is in this 'smodcast' from 2012. They pretty much sum up how we all feel about the great Gutt (warning: bad language from the start, plus much giggling).
