Downton Abbey bosses have vowed to spice up the drama with more death and romance.
The first episode of the fourth series was shown to the media on Tuesday.
And while we were banned from giving specifics, we can reveal the ITV show returns next month with a shock exit and a passionate kiss.
Executive producer Gareth Neame insisted they would âcarry on killing offâ characters after the Âcontroversial Christmas episode where Matthew Crawley died.
Â
He said: âIâm conscious I brought 10 million Christmas Days to a sudden and abrupt end.
âWhat was actually a gentle episode of a holiday, suddenly there was a sting in the tail. But these are the moments and the stuff of this kind of drama.
âIt is romantic, hopefully laugh out loud funny at times and has got dramatic stories with twists and turns. As shocking as that was, there are life and death situations that will happen to any family from time to time.â
Â
Gareth also revealed there could be romance for Lady Mary Crawley, played by Michelle Dockery, 31, once she has got over her husbandâs death.
He added: âAlthough Lady Mary is not really ready to move on from Matthew, that doesnât mean there isnât interest from other men in her. We have some new characters and it felt really Âenergised on set.â
Among the stars at the series launch were Elizabeth McGovern, 52, and Laura Carmichael, 26, who play Cora, Countess of Grantham and Lady Edith Crawley.
Â
It also emerged singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa will join the cast as Dame Nellie Melba in episode three.
Dame Nellie, a famed opera star in the early 20th century, is the first real-life character to feature in Downton.
Speaking of the role, Dame Kiri, 69, said: âI couldnât say yes fast enough.â
The show now has a global audience of 120 million in 220 territories.
