Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones have separated after 13 years of marriage.
The pair have endured a torrid time of late with Douglas undergoing cancer treatment and his wife being diagnosed with depression.
Today a spokesman for Michael told The Mirror: âMichael and Catherine are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage. There is no further comment.â
Insiders have confirmed that âthe stress has taken a toll on their marriageâ Another source told the US publication: âThey're taking a break.â
Speculation has raged for months about the state of their marriage.
Michael is currently holidaying in Sardinia solo while Catherine remains in New York.
The couple haven't been seen publicly together since 22 April, when they posed up on the red carpet at the 40th Annual Ch aplin Award Gala at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City.
They have reportedly not consulted divorce lawyers yet or made moves to make it a legal separation.
Â
Catherine and Michael married 13 years ago and they have two children together.
The actress recently opened up about her struggle with bipolar disorder for which she has sought treatment.
She has previously said of the illness: ''This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them.
"If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it.
''There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help.''
Michael, the son of Hollywood star Kirk Douglas, also hit the headlines this year after he said his battle against throat cancer was caused by performing oral sex.
The 68-year-old claimed his stage-four cancer was contracted through the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted disease.
