Selena Gomez criticised by Hindu group for wearing religious bindi symbol on stage: "She should apologise"

Selena Gomez has been branded "insensitive" after she performed her single Come Get It at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday with a religious bindi symbol on her forehead.

The singer and actress, 20, has come under fire from Hindu leaders in America who have demanded she apologise for wearing the decoration.

President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, Rajan Zed, told WENN:  "The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol…

"It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologise and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions."

The star wore a Bollywood-style outfit for the event

However, Selena performed on US television show Dancing with the Stars on Tuesday night and wore the item again.

Selena isn't the first celebrity to wear a bindi as part of their outfit with No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani and Russell Brand's ex-wife Katy Perry both sporting them in the past.

Little Mix star Perrie Edwards also came under fire for wearing one last year when she celebrated Eid with her One Direction singer boyfriend Zayn Malik and his family.

The backlash prompted Zayn to take a break from Twitter at the time after he grew tired of receiving critical messages but Perrie did not comment at the time.

Selena is also yet to respond to the comments she has received.

The singer is yet to speak out about the criticism
