The Voice star Jessie J slams Britain's Got Talent for 'ridiculing' child contestants

The Voice star Jessie J slams Britain's Got Talent for 'ridiculing' child contestants

The Voice star Jessie J has hit out at the treatment of children on rival show Britain’s Got Talent â€" claiming it should be ILLEGAL.

She joined the growing controversy this week over young children taking part in auditions, accusing Simon Cowell and Co of demeaning young contestants.

She said: “I cannot agree with kids having to go through three or four auditions when it’s purely for ridicule.

“I don’t understand why it’s legal, I think it’s wrong.

"I watched Britain’s Got Talent auditions and there are these kids getting laughed at by the audience. I’m like, ‘Woah, why?’’’

She added: “I get very uncomfortable seeing young kids on stage because I know what it’s like.”

The 25-year-old Voice judge spoke out after fellow BBC star Sir Bruce Forsyth warned children are subje cted to an “ordeal” on the ITV show.

Speaking ahead of rehearsals at The Voice’s studios, Jessie said she thinks viewers have grown tired of seeing youngsters exploited for entertainment.

She said: “They need to be children. I think the public, thank God, have finally realised that it’s wrong.”

And the Do It Like A Dude singer warned that the youngsters could be subjected to even more pressure after appearing on screen, from vicious and bullying jibes online, via social networking sites.

Flanked by her three show finalists â€" Ash Morgan, Sarah Cassidy and Matt Henry â€" she said: “I know however much greatness there is in this world there are also a lot of mean people behind computers.”

Her warnings echoed the thoughts of Strictly Come Dancing host Sir Bruce, who was labelled “Mr Grumpy” by Cowell after he said: “I don’t like to see children exploited or made to feel uncomfortable.”

A youngster in dance group Pre-Skool, made up of 13 five-to-eight-year-olds, was seen crying as she waited for a BGT verdict, while many members of Youth Creation â€" a group of 33 seven-to-14-year-olds â€" also became visibly emotional.

And more than 10 million viewers watched teenagers Jack Duff and Cormac Connell become distressed as Cowel l told them their nerves had hampered their performance.

Sir Bruce, 85, said: “I like Britain’s Got Talent. As a variety artist myself, how could I not? But I really do think he should stop putting young children under the immense and possibly damaging pressure of performing on national television, not just in front of a live audience, but also before four very sharp judges.

"You can see that many of the adult performers find the experience traumatic, so what sort of emotional damage could it be doing to children?”

The veteran entertainer also suggested that a show formatted specially for children might be the answer â€" to prevent them just being voted through to the final rounds because of sympathetic viewers.

He added: “It is not fair on the older performers up against the kids because kids as soon as they come on, they get the ‘ahh factor’.”

Bruce Forsyth on This Morning

Sir Bruce said he had found some episodes of the show unpleasant viewing, as several youngsters were seen in tears.

He added: “People are so careful about using animals in entertainment and we want to be more careful about what we expose children to.”

There was further controversy for BGT this week after a raunchy routine by guest star Jennifer Lopez sparked hundreds of complaints.

Jessie J said she understood criticism of the performance on the supposedly family-orientated show, saying producers and artists need to be aware of their audience and should “keep it classy”.

She added: “Being a woman and having whatever you’re given in life is something you should celebrate and not be afraid of â€" but don’t ever let it become bigger than your morals. It’s about understanding the boundaries in different situations â€" adapting yourself to the situation.

“It’s about getting the balance right.”

The Voice is is coming back for a third series
Jessie is a judge on rival show The Voice

Explaining how she adapts her own routines depending on her audience, she added: “You can play on the sexy thing but let it be a performance, be classy with it.

“It’s hard to get the balance right, if you’re too confident then you’re a slag, but if you’re not confident then people think, ‘She thinks she’s got it all’.

“It’s weird. In my new video people are like, ‘You’ve got no clothes on’ â€" but it’s tasteful and I’m 25 years old.

“I try and have the right balance between my six-year-old niece watching it, but it still being sexy.”

The Voice, which returns tonight at 8.30pm, has enjoyed a new lease of life this series with growing audiences of up to eight million per episode.

BBC bosses have confirmed plans for the singing contest, which also stars Sir Tom Jones, will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue, to return in 2014 for a third series.

Demi Lovato on her eating disorder: "My fans helped be overcome my issues but I still struggle"

Demi Lovato has spoken out about her former eating disorder and claims her fans helped with her recovery.

The singer, 20, spoke about her issues during an interview on BBC Radio 1 and claims she has struggled to stay healthy since leaving rehab in 2011.

She said: "My fans have helped me in many ways. One, because whenever I have struggled and thought about going back to bad habits like anyone that struggles with an eating disorder, there's been times when I have contemplated what I am really doing

"Do I really have a problem and then I think to myself, 'Yeah, my fans are holding me accountable and I have to stay strong for them.'"

The X Factor USA host looked healthy and happy when she took to the stage to perform on Britain's Got Talent on Thursday night.

And Demi believes her honesty has enabled her to get on in her career and get closer to her fans.

She said: "I've been honest about the things that I've been through and because of that a lot of people have learnt from my mistakes and the things that I've been open about.

"I think that's been what's brought me and my fans closer together."

The star also drew on her issues to offer fans who may be going through similar problems some help.

She said: "To the people out there who don't know what to do or where to go. The first step in getting help is just admitting that you have a problem and then telling them about it.

"Reach out to someone whether it's a friend or a family member just somebody who can help you get better and that's the most important thing. If you feel like you're in danger then you have to tell someone immediately."

'Gemma Arterton is very much a woman and very maternal': Byzantium's Saoirse Ronan on vampire fantasy thriller flick

'Gemma Arterton is very much a woman and very maternal': Byzantium's Saoirse Ronan on vampire fantasy thriller flick

She is only 19, but the gifted young actress Saoirse Ronan is a veteran of film and television, having begun her career at the age of nine in the Irish TV medical drama The Clinic.

Her big break came when she was 12 in Atonement, earning an Oscar nomination. Saoirse’s (pronounced Seer-sher) latest film is vampire thriller Byzantium â€" out today.

She plays Eleanor, the daughter of a 200-year-old mother played by Gemma Arterton.

Isn’t Gemma Arterton a bit young to be playing your mother?

Yes, she’s only eight years older than me but she’s very much a woman and very maternal. At least, she was with me.

And she’s such a terrific actress.

You’ve been dealing with creatures from other worlds lately. Do you think there are such things living around us?

I find it hard to believe there’s no one but us. There are still so many things that are lost out there that we don’t have a clue about.

I’m sure there are many other beings that are different to us living somewhere else, with crazy eyes.

You’ve been in a few scary movies. What scares you the most in real life?

I’m not afraid of spiders but I had this dream once that I was sleeping in my house, in the spare bedroom for some reason, and I woke up and thought I saw this massive spider just looking at me and I really freaked out.

I was really scared and I ran out of the room.

It was just an illusion but it really scared me.

You’re always referred to as an Irish actress but weren’t you actually born in America?

Yes, I was born in New York, but my parents are Irish and we went back to Ireland when I was three. I was raised in County Carlow but I have dual citizenship.

Your dad, Paul, is an actor, too, isn’t he?

Yes, I remember going on films sets with him when he was working on such films as The Devil’s Own and Veronica Guerin. We’re very close.

How do you enjoy the kissing scenes in your films?

They’re uncomfortable and awkward at first but you have to kind of get over it.

What is your favourite love story?

Romeo And Juliet is the classic love story. When two lovers are separated and ?trying to get back to one another, that’s fiercely romantic and something you become glued to.

Are you romantic?

Yes, to a certain extent, but I’m not soppy, if you know what I mean. But I do appreciate romance.

Who were the actors who influenced you most in your career?

I love a lot of comedy actors and actresses like Kristen Wiig and Tina Fey and all those women who are really brilliant and funny. And Meryl Streep.

There are a lot of people I’ve worked with who I really admire because I’m on the set with them every day and I see how they work and I know them as people.

You do a lot of running in your movies. Are you interested in sports?

I was a sprinter when I was young and I was quite fast.

I loved doing the 100 metre sprints and getting it all out in something like 18 seconds or whatever.

And somehow I always end up doing it in films and it’s really great. It keeps your energy up, especially when you’re doing fight choreography, and it gives you something to focus on.

You have several movies on the go at the moment, don’t you?

I’m filming How To Catch A Monster, which is Ryan Gosling’s writing and directing debut and itâ €™s cool, dark and a bit twisted, too.

It’s about an underwater town, and the struggles of the characters living in this dilapidated place.

And Violet Daisy, in which I play a hit girl, How I Live Now and The Grand Budapest Hotel are all coming out in the next year.

Then I’m due to play Mary Queen of Scots in a movie about her starting soon.

Weren’t you due to be in The Hobbit?

Yes, there was talk about me playing the wood elf Itaril but I had to turn it down.

?I was really disappointed but there were other projects I had to consider and to spend a year doing The Hobbit wouldn’t have left me time for anything else.

Harry Styles: One Direction star to be best man at mother Anne Cox's wedding

Harry Styles: One Direction star to be best man at mother Anne Cox's wedding

Heart-throb Harry Styles is set to be best man at his mum’s wedding tomorrow.

Anne Cox is getting married to long-term partner Robin Twist who helped to raise Harry after his parents split when he was seven.

And the 19-year-old boy band star is said to be thrilled at the honour.

Anne, 43, who lives in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, with Robin and daughter Gemma, 20, picked the date to fit in with Harry’s hectic tour schedule â€" and the rest of the band are also thought to be attending.

Guests will only be told details of the wedding at the last minute to keep the venue under wraps.

Robin’s son, Mike, from a previous relationship, will be another of several best men at the ceremony.

Office worker Anne, who divorced Harry’s dad Des, has always supported the singer’s ambitions.

And he has described her as one of his best friends, admitting she is the only one who really knows what’s going on in his infamous love life: “I tell her everything, and she knows the truth”.

She was his biggest fan when he sang with school band White Eskimo and is friends with all the 1D boys. They were invited to stay in the bungalow at the bottom of the family’s garden for a week as they prepared for the live X Factor finals.

Anne was in the X Factor audience every week in a “Harry has the X Factor” T-shirt and is also an avid user of Twitter, regularly updating his fans on the social networking site.

Louis Walsh has announced plans to form a new boy band to rival One Direction
The One Direction lads are also expected to be at the wedding

She was also her son’s date at this year’s Brit Awards and could not hide her pride when 1D won the Global Success Award. The pair later arrived arm-in-arm at the swanky official Sony after-party at London’s Arts Club.

And Anne has been vocal about Harry’s romances, saying he would make a lovely boyfriend â€" one day.

She said: “He’ll make a very nice boyfriend when he’s ready. He’s very romantic but doesn’t want to tie himself down at the moment.

“Harry is obviously very handsome or ‘fit’ as the girls would say. Whoever Harry falls in love with in the future will be a really lucky girl.”

'We are not a freak show': Tom Jones spells out why The Voice is better than rival The X Factor

'We are not a freak show': Tom Jones spells out why The Voice is better than rival The X Factor

Tom Jones has defended criticism of The Voice â€" saying it is “not a freak show” and he wants to come back for a third series.

Hitting out at a backlash around the second series and a dip in ratings, 72-year-old Tom insisted The Voice was better than rivals like The X Factor because of the surprise element.

He said: “In defence of The Voice, the people go through all those auditions so when the people come in they can actually sing. There are no freaks and you don't get any shock value like if you were on some other show.

“You know what I mean. They do it for shock value. Maybe they get viewers because of that I don't know, but The Voice is all about singers.

“There is no shock value and the blind auditions, you don't know if it is a boy or a girl. You cant see them.

“On other shows the audience get all the information about a singer before they actually sing. So they are on that person's side.”

Alan Carr with Sir Tom Jones Danny
"The Voice is the Olympics of singing": Danny on Alice Fredenham

Appearing with fellow Voice judge Danny O'Donoghue on Channel 4's Chatty Man on Friday night, Tom also took a dig at TV judges like Simon Cowell.

He said: “We are performers. What I love about this show is that the four coaches, we are all  performers.

“We have all been on that stage doing it. So we feel what they feel, as opposed to other people that are not performers that judge on other shows... not naming anybody.”

He said he would do a third series of The Voice “as long as Danny did.”

And Danny then claimed BGT contestant Alice Fredenham, who also appeared on The Voice, was not up to scratch.

He said: “In fairness none of us turned around. The Voice is the Olympics of singing.

"When she was on there were 30 other people who sounded like her. She just did not stick above the clouds... when you have her coming on after a dancing dog or someone cutting their own arm off.

"The girl has talent though. She has talent. She is a gorgeous looking girl, but we did not know that at the time. You are not getting through on your looks, you have to get through on your voice.

"There was something in the papers about me using The Voice as my own personal Take Me Out show. I can't even see them.”

Lucy Mecklenburgh, her ex Mario and his new love were at TOWIE's 'all white' party together

Lucy Mecklenburgh, her ex Mario and his new love were at TOWIE's 'all white' party together

Let's face it, heading to party where your ex boyfriend turns up with his new girlfriend isn't going to be a walk in the park.

Unless of course, you look like Lucy Mecklenburgh, who showed Mario exactly what he was missing as she strolled into a TOWIE party in Marbs looking less reality star and more screen siren.

And the cast of TOWIE didn't just opt for white stilettos for the bash, as an all-white dress code made for some blinding results.

With more fake tan and wedge heels than an evening out in Essex, the whole cast made a dazzling troop as they strolled into the glamorous bash.

Lucy Mecklenburgh
Now that's how to impress an ex: Lucy looked less reality star and more screen siren

Although it was Lucy, 21, with her deep tan and off the shoulder floor length gown, who stole the show, looking more glamorous than ex Mario and his new love - who probably just rummaged through her beach bag to find something appropriate.

Lucy couldn't bear to raise a smile as she glided into the Sisu Boutique Hotel in Marbs for the bash, which surprisingly wasn't sponsored by any washing powder company, keeping her pout firmly in place.

Perhaps she had been taking tips from Hollywood's finest after a spell in Cannes earlier this month.

Despite virtually everyone in Marb's checking Lucy out, Mario, 26, kept his eyes on his new unidentified lady - who walked into the party in a cream mullet dress and odd coloured heels, all the while clutching tailor Mario as if for dear life.

But in typical cad style Mario took to Twitter on Wednesday to deny he had a new girlfriend, saying he was just having some fun - does your new lady know about this Mario?

Other guests included Sam and Billie Faiers, a bizarrely dressed Jessica Wright, and newbie Ferne McCann.

Lucy ceremoniously dumped Mario, not for his love of ultra-tight skinny jeans, but for his inability to stay faithful. Speaking to 3am's Ashleigh earlier on the Marbs holiday the TOWIE glamour puss gave her holiday top tips on looking good poolside, scroll down for a quick lesson.

She recently revealed Mario begged her to stay with him but said after his love rat ways, said there was no way she would entertain staying with the slick quiff-lover.

And the slinky brunette has moved on from incessantly crying, to exercising.

In a recent interview with new! magazine Lucy revealed she has became "addicted' to training and must work-out at least once a day, while she keeps to a diet of burgers (we believe you).

Handily she is launching a health website: 'Results with Lucy' where she will be sharing her diet and exercise tips.

In a message on the site, she wrote: "With my fab personal trainer Cecilia and her amazing team, join me on my journey from barely fit and dreading the gym, to looking and feeling great.

"I'm still on my journey and now you're welcome along for the ride. But not as a spectator, oh no, this is a participants only website!"
