Michelle Collins has never shied away from playing strong female roles.

She shot to fame as the scheming Cindy Beale in EastEnders, and for the last two years she has played glamorous but tough landlady Stella Price in Coronation Street.

But while the actress might be caked in make-up and shoehorned into Lycra outfits to stand behind the bar at the Rovers Return, in real life, she’s shocked at how young girls dress these days.

“I believe in feminism and a woman using this as a tool but I feel women go too far with their looks,” says Michelle, 51.

“The porn-star look seems to be very popular at the moment and I’m like, ‘Why do women dress like that?’

"I’ve played roles where I’ve had to dress in an overtly sexy way, but otherwise I just do what I do for me and my plan is to grow old gracefully.

“What is even sadder is that younger and younger girls are having their boobs, teeth and lips done. It’s crazy. I just t hink it’s really sad.

“You think, ‘Why can’t young girls just be happy with what they’ve got?’ Go to the gym. Don’t start having surgery. It’s ridiculous.

“I believe in education and empowering yourself by being clever. It’s better to be a beautiful, intelligent woman.

“Why be a dumb woman who just looks OK but you can’t talk to her?

“I just wish there were a lot more women out there who would feel more confident and not worry so much about having to get their boobs out to impress blokes. I just find the whole thing really sad.”

And the star has little time for the glamorous young girls who shot to fame in the reality TV show TOWIE.

“Don’t even get me started on programmes like The Only Way Is Essex!” she exclaims.

“It’s saturated the market, hasn’t it? That sort of fake-tanned, big-boobed, big hair, false lips, false this, false that and, in the end, there’s nothing natural left.”

As mum to 16-year-old daughter Maia, it’s clear why Michelle feels so passionately about the over-sexualisation of young women.

Raising Maia mainly on her own, after splitting with her Italian father Fabrizio Tassalini two years after her birth, Michelle has worked hard to make her realise the power of a good education and independence over looks.

“I’ve instilled in her how important education is and, yes, she is a beautiful young girl, but she’s also bright and she works really, really hard.

“I think that’s more important than bringing your kids up saying, ‘It’s all right, you can meet a rich guy and rely on them’.

"I’ve never done that in my entire life and I certainly wouldn’t want my daughter to do that.

“Obviously, I want her to find someone to settle down with who is lovely, but I think it’s important to be independent for as long as you can and to be financially independent so you don’t have to rely on anybo dy but yourself.”

After a stormy on-off relationship with Fabrizio, a two-year fling with cameraman Mark Waters, and an ultimately doomed engagement to Welsh media tycoon Parry Cockwell, Michelle is currently single.

“Finding the one and settling down is important but you know what?” she ponders. “At the moment I think if you don’t think about those things then they happen. I’m half in Manchester, half in London. I have a bit of a mad crazy life at the moment so it would have to be somebody who would fit in with that.

“I’m enjoying life right now and the most important thing at the moment is Maia and her getting through her GCSEs in May.

“That’s a bit stressful, but once we get through those I’ll start feeling a lot happier.”

On screen, her character Stella is enjoying a bit of cougar action, cavorting with buff brickie Jason Grimshaw, 22 years her junior, played by 28-year-old Ryan Thomas,.

After a shaky start, wit h soap fans slamming her northern accent, the Hackney-born star is approaching her second anniversary at the Rovers Return and is enjoying every minute of it. “I’m absolutely loving it,” she says.

“I never envisaged I’d be in Corrie. If someone had told me years ago I’d have said, ‘You’re joking’, but right now it’s amazing and obviously the toy boy storyline is great fun.

“I’ve got loads of other good stuff coming up where my ex Karl gets very sinister and becomes totally obsessed with me, so it’s all good.”

Although she’s in great shape â€" she’s a size 10 â€" Michelle was less than happy about hitting the half-century mark. Yet rather than head for the nearest Botox clinic, she’s embracing her sixth decade with typical Collins resilience.

“I lead a healthy lifestyle now. I eat a lot of soya, a little bit of chicken and fish but it’s more or less a vegetarian diet. I do Pilates and power-walking with my dog.

“I’m aware that as someone on TV my appearance is quite important, but I’m more into toning than ripping these days. I’d rather look healthy and toned than too thin and gaunt,” she reveals.

< p>“Whether you’re in the business or not, every woman thinks about plastic surgery but I do think society embraces older women more these days.

“Obviously, I don’t want my roles to dry up as I get older but there are a lot of successful older actresses out there and I’m lucky in the sense that I play real people and real people get older.

“I’ve played lots of different roles and I’ve never really got roles because of how I looked anyway.

“If you were a beautiful actress who had always got jobs based on your looks that might be difficult but I’m more of a character actress.”

For that reason, she doesn’t overly worry about a few extra wrinkles or grey hairs.

“What’s the point? You’d end up driving yourself crazy. It’s silly. You can’t turn the clock back and however much you have your lips done or your face lifted you still look like an older woman who has had too much surgery.

“This whole lip thing. I rea lly don’t get that. I just hate it.”

But one step she has taken to keep the wrinkles at bay is quitting smoking after 35 years.

“I was never a 40-a-day smoker but I was a big social smoker. I was a binge-smoker at the weekend and then I’d feel bloody awful for a few days.

"I never smoked in front of Maia but she’s always hated smoking and as a parent you can’t carry on smoking and preach to your children about it.

“Then one of my relatives died of a smoking-related disease and my grandma in Italy died of emphysema.

"After a while you think, ‘This is silly’. I need to be healthy because of the lifestyle I lead,” she says.

“Apart from being terrible for your heart and lungs and decreasing your life expectancy by 10 years, smoking is bad for your skin. I just couldn’t think of any positives.”

She has tried every stop-smoking method available over the years, but puts her success this time down to willpower and her doctor.

“There are tons of meth ods out there â€" hypnotherapy, books â€" I’ve tried so many different things but maybe it wasn’t the right time.

"You’ve got to want to give up. You can’t go to your doctor and expect them to wave a magic wand.

“Smoking is a powerful physical and psychological addiction. If you see your doctor when you’re trying to give up rather than trying to do it on your own, you’re four times more likely to stop.

“I haven’t smoked for 18 months now and I’d like to say that I’ll never have another cigarette but you just don’t know, do you?

“Right now I feel a lot healthier than I did in my 30s and 40s when I was smoking heavily.

“I feel fitter, I look fresher and in the age of HD TV, actresses need all the help they can get with wrinkles!”

Even with her role in Corrie going well, Michelle always has one eye on the next job and she’s hoping that Maia’s hard work at school pays off for both of them.

“She loves drama but she’s also great at writing, so hopefully she’ll study English at university.

"I want her to be a writer so she can write me some parts and keep me in work in the future!” she laughs.

Pop group 5ive - AKA everyone's favourite Nineties boyband (apart from Take That. And Boyzone. And Westlife. Oh dear...) - have told how life in the band was "mental" and describe it as a "train wreck".

In scenes from ITV2's brilliant new show The Big Reunion, which sees bands including Liberty X, Atomic Kitten and B*Witched reform, the boys reveal how behind their fresh faces and cool hair cuts lay anger, exhaustion and a whole lot of attitude.

“On stage we were the best ever. Off stage we were a train wreck," says Scott, who now has two children. We know - someone who used to have that ridiculous spiky hair managed to procreate. Go figure.

He adds: "Life in 5ive was mental. It was five years of very hard work.

"You see the inside of a hotel room, an airport, a radio studio. It’s hard.”

Band mate Abz addz: "I know there were times when one of them would be p*ssed off with another one (in the band). There’d be fights going off.”

Billie Piper's ex-boyfriend Richie agrees, saying: “We were difficult, bordering on being ar*eholes. We were delinquents.”

Life was particularly hard for 5ive-r Sean, who reveals that he left the group after suffering a breakdown - although at the time it was explained as 'glandular fever'.

Sean says: “I remember looking in the mirror and thinking to myself, 'Who is that?' I didn’t know myself and I just had the strongest feeling that no matter what happens no matter how much money they throw at me I’ve got to find Sean. Otherwise I make thousands of pounds but I’d be spending it all on therapy.

“I just wanted a week off from being Scott from 5ive. I was on the edge. We quit at our peak, we were number one at the time and we jumped ship.”

Richie also recalls the moment that he knew it was all over after Scott broke down in tears.

We're getting a little emotional looking at this. Mainly because we'd forgotten all about VIRGIN MEGASTORES!

He says:  “We were in this hotel and Scott just broke down, he was crying his eyes out.  Jay and I walked out to him and put our arms around him and he said,  ‘I just can’t do it anymore.'  I remember looking at Jay and he just looked at me and just went, ‘It’s done isn’t it?’  And I went, ‘I think it is.'"

Nowadays, the five bad boys with the power to rock you have become, umm, FOUR bad boys with the power to rock you, after fifth member Jay decided not to take part in the reunion - which hasn't gone down too well with the rest of the band.

Scott says: “I was annoyed with Jay when he said he didn’t want to be a part of this.  I was really angry because I’ve been personally myself been trying to get this band back together for years and years and someone’s let it down. He will be missed."

And Abz adds:  “I don’t want him to regret because it could be something amazing."

'Could' be something amazing? We've no doubt about it, Abz.

The Big Reunion starts at 9pm tonight on ITV2.

Denise has apparently been trying to lose weight before she ties the knot with her toyboy   (he's 40, she's 54 - good work) in July.

We assume she's been doing this by hitting the treadmill and eating healthily but she's also been making use of Lincoln's "SESSIONS" too.

Lindsay Lohan arrived in court in Los Angeles today, despite saying that she was too ill to attend.

The Mean Girls actress had previously filed papers stating that she had a flu-like illness and couldn’t fly back from New York to LA to attend the court date.

However, after being snapped at New York's JFK airport last night (with her face looking more than a little bloated), we figured Linds had decided to do the responsible thing and show up after all.

And that's just what she's gone and done, donning her best 'look how grown up and trustworthy I am' outfit in honour of the appointment.

Lindsay arrived at the court in Los Angeles wearing a little black dress and a pair of zebra and polka dot print heels. She accessorised her look with mum Dina on her arm.

She'd managed a wardrobe change somewhere between arriving in Los Angeles and leaving New York, where she was seen boarding her plane wearing leather trousers, a matching leather coat with fur sleeves and a big hat. Well, leather and fur aren't really made for LA weather, are they?

Inside the courtroom, Lindsay came face to face with Judge Stephanie Sautner, the same judge that sentenced Linds to community service for stealing a necklace in 2011 .

Is that a light from heaven shining down on Lindsay? Probably not

This time round, Lindsay's in court to determine whether she violated the terms of her recent probation, to which she's pleaded not guilty. She's also been charged with 'obstruction', 'providing false information to an officer' and 'driving with wanton disregard'. Oo-er.

Judge Stephanie (we're meant to call judges by their first name, like Judge Judy, right?) scheduled a trial for 27 February, and warned La Lohan that even if jurors find her not guilty in the trial, she could still be found in violation of her probation - which means she could still face some more jail time.

Judge Stephanie also dryly told Lindsay: "I'm glad you're feeling better."

Which we reckon she meant in an ironic kind of way.

Watch out One Direction! X Factor’s Union J sign a record deal with Simon Cowell

Union J are the latest X Factor act to sign a record deal after the foursome secured a contract with RCA Records.

A statement from them read: “We are absolutely thrilled to be signed to RCA. Being on X Factor was such a great experience and the perfect way for us to start our musical journey.

“Hopefully 2013 will an amazing year for us and we cannot wait for everyone to hear our music.”

The boys have already started recording some material and are expected to release their first single in June through the Sony subsidiary.

Last month Jaymi Hensley revealed they were joining the group, which Simon Cowell is a boss at, but didn’t confirm which label they would sign to.

The One Direction boys are used to flying out to faraway places and being mobbed for autographs and photos by screaming girls.

So when they came face to face with children just a few years younger than them struggling in poverty, it brought them down to earth with a bump.

Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson were moved to tears at a school in Ghana as youngsters surrounded them wanting nothing more than a smile.

The boys visited the poverty-hit city of Accra with Comic Relief to film a video for their single, a fusion of Blondie’s One Way or Another and The Undertones’ Teenage Kicks, which is out today in aid of the charity.

Harry, 19 tomorrow, admitted: “We all had moments. If you get involved in it and you don’t cry you’re superhuman.

"We’ve seen appeal films before so we thought we knew what it’s like.

"But when you’re there and you get the smells, your eyes hurt from the smoke, you cou gh, you’re feeling it all.

“The crazy thing is, when I went to school not one person wanted to be there. Yet you go into a school in Ghana and every child loves it.

"It’s amazing to see. There are 10-year-old kids speaking better French than I can.

“It’s crazy how quick you get ­connections with children and people who live there. You feel upset leaving them and saying goodbye to them.”

Life expectancy for women in Ghana is 63 compared with 82 here. And 28% of the 25 million population live in poverty.

Niall, 19, was deeply affected. “It was the shock of people struggling to get water and watching people work 12 hours a day for little money.”

The five stars will appear in a film during Red Nose Day next month that documents their time in Ghana.

The appeal has raised more than £600million to help educate poor children.

One Direction will not receive any royalties for the single. They even shot the video on their own to save cash.

Niall said: “We didn’t want to make a massive expensive video because that’s just a big waste of money. So we kinda made it ourselves.”

Liam, 19, said he will never forget the poverty he witnessed and hopes people will get behind their efforts.

“We just want people to buy the single and help raise as much money as possible,” he said.

Louis, 21, added: “By buying the song, together we’ll change people’s lives. What an amazing thing to do. Buy music that you like and change lives.”

There were lighter moments for the group during the visit as the children greeted them with calls of... “Westlife!”

Liam recalled: “In the slum there were these lads that we were playing football with.

"They turned around to us and were like: ‘Ah, Westlife, Westlife!’

"So, Westlife are bigger than us over there. That’s something we’ve gotta achieve...”

 

It was a different reaction than they’re used to. Zayn, 20, said: “In the slum people didn’t know who we were.”

Niall said many of the children were more musically gifted than 1D.

“We walked into a school and they started singing a welcome song to us,” he said with a laugh.

“It was really good. There were three and four-year-old kids with better rhythm than us.”

But, joking apart, they insist their song which will have its live debut at next month’s Brit Awards, is “half decent”.

Zayn said: “We can’t wait to get out there at the Brits. We really want to give it a good performance. It’s for such a great cause.”

They will certainly catch the eye if Harry sticks to this promise...

Recalling a certain Union flag dress, he winked and said: “I will be wearing THE Geri Halliwell dress and the platforms.”

The band, formed on the X Factor in 2010, are also nominated in the Best British Group cat egory and are up against Muse and Mumford & Sons.

“We don’t stand a chance,” laughed Louis, even though the boys scooped the Best British Single award last year.

Liam said: “The category is absolutely insane. We’re massive fans of Mumford & Sons so to be in the same category as them...”

He paused and said: “We’re just gonna see what happens.”

Liam, 19, is also worried about getting too close to another performer, Beyoncé, on the night.

“My girlfriend might, quite possible, kill me,” he chuckled.

He was talking about Danielle Peazer, a dancer now on tour with last year’s X Factor finalists.

She met the 1D star while he was a contestant on the show â€" though the pair split last year, after which Liam briefly dated Leona Lewis.

Louis has been in a relationship with student Eleanor Calder for a year and she has amassed over one million 1D fans as Twitter followers.

Zayn hit the headlines last weekend when Australian waitress Courtney Webb claimed she bedded him while his ­girlfriend Perrie Edwards toured the country with her band Little Mix.

Niall has been linked to a string of women, including X Factor USA judge Demi Lovato.

He is now rumoured to be dating drama student Amy Green.

And it seems Harry is seeing a different famous woma n every week.

He has caused a stir by hooking up with Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack, 31, and most recently US pop star Taylor Swift, 23.

 

It is no wonder the boys often find themselves compared to The Beatles. They don’t agree, though.

Louis sighed and said: “They are far cooler and far better, just generally.

But Liam chipped in to say of his ­bandmate’s looks and attitude: “I often think that Louis is a little bit of a Lennon. He’s got that wild side to him.”

While they joke, the boys know what a difference their fame can make.

Louis said: “When we were at school everyone always wanted to do something fun for Red Nose Day.

"I even dyed my hair red one year. It’s amazing that now as a band we are involved with Comic Relief.

"It was fantastic to see where the money goes first-hand.”

Samia Ghadie is “fed up” at speculation over her controversial relationship with Dancing On Ice partner Sylvain Longchambon and insists the couple have done “nothing wrong.”

She was forced to make the comments after Sylvain’s ex-girlfriend Jennifer Metcalfe claimed the pair were dating and hinted blame at Samia for ending their two-year romance.

The Coronation Street actress told Heat magazine: "I'm getting really fed up of all the speculation about my personal life - we've never spoken about it, because I've not got anything to say and it's just his ex-girlfriend selling stories, so...

"There's nothing I can do about th at, but I know I've done nothing wrong. I'm really happy - I'm getting on with my life and trying to be good at skating and be a good mum and that's it."

She added: "That's all I care about. I can sleep in my bed knowing I've done nothing wrong - that's all that matters to me."

It was reported that rival soap star Jennifer avoided attending the National Television Awards last week because of fears she would run into her ex and his new partner.

Fit model Cara Delevingne might want to ignore her Twitter mentions for a few days months after she mocked One Direction fans for lacking creativity in their death threats.

Recovery position: Caring Danniella springs to help man

Quick-thinking soap star Danniella Westbrook has saved a man who collapsed in the street.

Soap star Danniella put him in the recovery position, cleared his airways and called 999.

Onlookers hailed the former EastEnders actress as a hero and say without her speedy intervention the 51-year-old man could easily have died.

Modest Danniella, 39, told the Mirror yesterday: “It’s flattering if people are calling me a hero but I don’t want to make too much of a fuss.

"I was just doing my bit and would help anyone else in the same situation.

“It all happened so quickly and was scary but I tried to keep my cool until the arrival of the emergency services who were brilliant.”

A witness said Danniella, who has just joined Hollyoaks, “sprang into action and calmly took control” when she saw the man slumped on the pavement at night.

One onlooker said: “There is no doubt that without Danniella’s quick thinking things could have been much worse.

"She was every inch a hero as she whipped off her jacket and covered him up to keep him warm in the freezing cold.

“She also asked a passer-by for their coat, checked the chap’s airways, put him in the recovery position, and managed to keep him conscious until paramedics arrived.”

Mum-of-two Danniella had been out for dinner with friends and husband Kevin Jenkins when she saw the collapsed man outside the restaurant in London’s West End.

Help arrives: Ambulance crew takes over

A source close to Danniella said: “She was having supper and a few drinks but left early because she had quite a busy time planned with the kids.

"She’s glad she was in the right place at the right time.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said two crews were sent to the scene in Soho on Friday night and the man was treated at St Thomas’ Hospital in South London.

Danniella was having dinner to celebrate her first month of filming on the Channel 4 soap. Her first scenes will be screened soon.

She played fiery Sam Mitchell in EastEnders on and off from 1990 until 2010.

Danniella, who kicked her near-fatal cocaine habit 12 years ago, is said to be “excited” about her soap comeback.

We're very excited. This isn't 100 per cent happening and we don't even live in New York, but we're very excited.

Tina Fey has announced that she's developing a musical for Mean Girls! Yaaaaaaaaay!

Speaking to reporters at the SAG Awards, Tina - who wrote Mean Girls back in 2004 - confessed that she IS working on the project.

When asked if the iconic film would ever hit Broadway, Tina said: "I'm trying to develop it, actually, with my husband, who does all the music for  30 Rock .

She added: "And I think Paramount's onboard."

This could actually be happening! Again, we don't live in New York, but if it's a success - which it will be - we're hoping it would come to London.

Speaking back in 2007, Tina said: "I thought the movie in some ways mostly appealed to young girls and gay men, and I feel like that could be a recipe for success on Broadway."

And while we can't imagine that Rachel McAdams (head beeyatch Regina George), Amanda Seyfried (airhead Karen Smith) would return, this would be the perfect job for Lindsay Lohan to take on.

"It's an amazing part of my career and working with Caroline has been great."

Rock legend Sir Elton John proudly shows off his new baby son â€" as he talked about his “close bond” with the mystery woman who acted as surrogate to both his children.

The star and husband David Furnish posed with Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John and first son Zachary, two, for a family snap.

In a touching tribute to the surrogate, Sir Elton, 65, said: “She is a wonderful, kind and loving woman, who we love like a sister.

“We have a very close bond with her and were in constant touch throughout the pregnancy. She has given us two amazing gifts and we in turn have a duty of care to her and are fiercely protective of her anonymity.”

He also spoke movingly to Hello! magazine about his love for the new baby, saying: “I have learned that a parent’s capacity for love is endless.

“When another child is born, our depth of love just grows deeper and wider, so it was very em otional.”

Elijah, who was born in California, USA, on January 11, was conceived using the same egg donor as elder brother Zachary.

David, 50, added: “Throughout our lives we have both loved and been loved, but the love of a parent for his or her child is different to anything else, as all parents will know.

“You find new depths of love, and experience pure joy.”

Choosing to keep her mouth shut on the whole debate - which saw some accusing her of miming, others saying she sang to a backing track, many believing she was live and a whole lot more exclaiming that it didn't really matter - Beyonce seems to be enjoying the ongoing mystery.

On her new record, which has taken over a year for Miley to write and record, the singer said she's feeling a tad nervous. "Some of the worst things that have happened in my career, like things getting leaked, have actually been what's best for me, because people knew when I was on that show that I was really growing up. I never faked anything."

Having stared at the singer's chest for a good few minutes, we can confirm that there is nothing fake about our Miley.

Telly beauty Tess Daly has banned Splash! host husband Vernon Kay from wearing shorts on the show â€" because they’re a fashion flop.

She told him they had to take a dive after he was ridiculed on Twitter for wearing a navy pair on the first two shows, the Sunday People has reported.

Tess said: “I was so embarrassed when I saw Vernon in those shorts. I was like: ‘Eurgh, they’ve just got to go, you’re not wearing those again.’ I knew people would laugh at him.”

Vernon, 38, ditched the Bermudas for full-length trousers for the third heat of the Tom Daley diving show last week, which was won by Olympic boxer Anthony Ogogo.

Tess said the wardrobe change was on her orders.

She added: “I told him that I’m his wife and he should wear trousers instead. So he changed his look and hopefully won’t go back to shorts again.”

But while Vernon’s clothes haven’t gone down swimmingly, the show â€" which he co-hosts with Gabby Logan has been a hit with his daughters Phoebe, eight and Amber, three.

Tess, 43, said: “We watch it at home and the kids love it. They get chairs and a little rug and pretend to dive in front of the TV. It’s hilarious.”

The Strictly host was speaking at the National Television Awards on Wednesday where she collected the Talent Show award for the BBC celebrity dance series.

And it was clear their marriage is back on track after Vernon’s sex text scandal in 2010 with glamour model Rhian Sugden.
