But today Miley Cyrus has been branded a "bad role model" and is accused of promoting drug use in new lyrics.
The controversial singer has premiered her tune We Canât Stop â" which cynics on Twitter claim is reference to addiction â" and includes talk of ecstasy, cocaine and strip clubs.
Miley unveiled her song yesterday on On Air With Ryan Seacrest, telling the host: "Everyone always judges and says what they want.
âBut my fans have really stood by me no matter what I've been through - and this is a song that says where I'm at in my life right now."
Miley â" who is going through relationship troubles with on-off fiancé Liam Hemsworth â" has b een criticised for appearing to sing about drugs in We Cant Stop Now.
She sings: âSo la da da di we like to party / Dancing with Molly."
Molly is a well-known slang term for party-drug ecstasy.
The song continues: âTo my homegirls here with the big butts / Shaking it like we at a strip club.â
Before making a reference to people doing lines of cocaine: âAnd everyone in line in the bathroom / Trying to get a line in the bathroom.â
The 20-year-old has been collaborating with some high profile producers including Pharrell â"who raps similar lyrics in his own song Everyone Noise.
Miley, who has more than 12 million followers on Twitter, has had mixed responses to the song.
One user wrote: "Miley Cyrus is such a bad role model for kids."
While another blamed her for a wider scale of problems: "With lyrics like this, there's no wonder this generation is so messed up.â
A fan rubbished the scandal and backed the ex-teen queen, saying: âMiley Cyrus proves that a suggestive association with drugs and vulgarity can result in a solid comeback. Amazing.â
The single will appear on Mileyâs fourth studio album titled The Last Song.
Speaking at the Billboard Awards back in May she confessed her excitement at being able to express herself. âI feel like I can really be myself.
âI really have more of a connection of who I am, and I feel like I can maybe express that more in my music now.â
Yesterday she cast doubt over her relationship with Liam by wearing a bracelet that boasts her ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas' name on.
It sounds like she just needs to go for a lie down or something.
