Twilight star Ashley Greene escapes a dramatic house fire that killed her dog

Saddest news story of the day: Twilight star Ashley Greene is in mourning today after one of her dogs died in a house fire.

Ashley's West Hollywood apartment caught fire in the middle of the night after she left a candle burning unattended, TMZ reports.

The Twilight actress, her brother Joe and a man reports are either describing as Ashley's boyfriend (she was recently linked to Ryan Phillippe but it wasn't him) or Ashley's assistant were asleep in the flat when it caught fire, and had to be evacuated.

A massive ten fire engines were at the blaze

Apparently when they left, they realised that Ashley's two dogs, Marlo and Theo, were still in the building and one of the men ran back in to save them. Only one dog survived, but reports are unclear which dog died. Ashley was pictured cradling a dog wrapped in a blanket and crying.

TMZ reports that the surviving dog, which was covered in soot, was taken to the vets to get checked, and the dead dog was found under the bed. TMZ also reports that Ashley kept the body of the dog that didn't make it.

The LA county fire department described the fire as "aggressive"

The fire totally destroyed her flat in the Granville Apartments (where celebs like Mickey Rourke and Marilyn Monroe have lived) - ten fire engines were called out and 55 firemen were at the scene.

Everything Ashley, who played Alice Cullen in the Twilight films, owns is now burnt to a crisp - we can't even imagine how she'll be feeling today.

This is Marlo - awww

Ashley's talked about how much she loves her dogs - both fox terriers - in the past. When she first got Marlo, she admitted that she took her along to events and onto the Twilight set because she couldn't bear to leave her alone. "She was meant to be mine," she said at the time. "I wasn't looking for a dog, and I happened to see her picture online, and I was like, 'I have to have that dog.' "

Now if you'll excuse us, we're off to have a cry and to never, ever light a candle again.
