Holy combover, Batman! Christian Bale gets shocking transformation for new film

Holy combover, Batman! Christian Bale gets shocking transformation for new film

Christian Bale loves a big transformation for a role.

In 2004 he famously lost five stone to play insomniac Trevor Reznik in The Machinist by barely sleeping and surviving on coffee and apples. Well, like, "method".

And for his new role in the as-yet-untitled David O'Russell film (he directed Silver Linings Playbook, FYI), Christian's clearly packed on the weight for his part.

And also done that horrible thing with his hair that bald men who can't admit they're bald do.

We'd love to know if Christian shaved his head or is wearing a baldy wig

This hair is so bad, we almost didn't notice the velvet suit

Christian portrays Melvin Weinberg (yeah, he looks like a Melvin) who was at the centre of the FBI's famous Abscam sting operation in the 1970s that lead to the conviction of a number of US congressmen.

Well we say famous, but we've never heard of it.

Christian's signature chat-up move wasn't working any more for some reason

But at least that explains the 70s-style suit.

Amy Adams also stars in the film as Maxine Gardner, Melvin's co-conspirator and mistress.

She faired a bit better from the wardrobe/hair and make-up department and just had auburn curly hair and some flared trousers.

This photo is so 1970s we want to sing the Bee Gees just looking at it

Christian's not the only actor to change form lately for his art.

Matthew McConaughey lost three stone to play an HIV-suffering drug addict for his movie The Dallas Buyers' Club.

Luckily he's since got his lovely muscles back.

If you're wondering how Christian has managed to pile on the pounds since The Dark Knight Rises, he's probably been down his local Pizza Hut.

Christian gained weight after The Machinist by eating pizza and ice-cream. Lovely idea.

"I overdid it because I was enjoying gorging. I was ignoring advice about taking it slowly because my stomach had shrunk, and I should just go with soups," said Christian.

But come on! Who likes soup?!

"I was straight into pizza and ice-cream and eating five meals in a sitting. My stomach expanded really quickly. I got very sick during that time but I enjoyed gett ing sick. I didn't mind it at all."

We bet you didn't.

Let's take a moment to remember how hot he is normally

See you down the ice-cream factory then Chris! Leave some chocolate sprinkles for the rest of us.

After this, Christian might well be back to starvation mode as he's tipped to play Moses in Ridley Scott's epic.

From what we remember from Sunday School, Moses was pretty skinny. And didn't have a combover.

Fancy seeing some other Hollywood stars who've gone through extreme weight changes for a part? Of course you do!
