Lauryn Hill: Fugees singer sentenced to three months in jail over £640k tax bill

Hip-hop star Lauryn Hill was given three months in jail today over taxes owed on earnings of £640,000.

The 37-year-old Fugees singer said she had always meant to pay but was unable to because she had dropped out of the music business.

She said: “I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children.”

Her lawyer said Hill had already paid more than £620,000 in state and federal taxes.

It’s not clear when or where she’ll be imprisoned.

The judge in Newark, New Jersey, also gave her an additional three months in “home confinement”.

After the Fugees, Hill had a successful solo career starting in 1998 with the hit album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

She then disappeared from public view to raise her six children, five of whom she had with Rohan Marley, the son of reggae legend Bob.
