Ricky Gervais on how he became pen pals with David Bowie, even though the rock icon blanked Derek star first time they met

Ricky Gervais has revealed he said 'Hallo Spaceboy' to David Bowie - but was blanked when they first met as he didn't know who the comedian was.

The star of The Office is now firm friends with Bowie, but in July 2001 he was just starting to become a famous face as his sitcom began on TV.

Gervais, 52, explained: "David Bowie has been a hero of mine for 25 years. He is quite special and you meet him and you think he is going to come out of some weird tube and say 'hello, I'm a space boy'. But he doesn't, he says 'hello I'm David'.

"The first time I met David The Office had just broke. I went to 'An Audience with' at the BBC and we saw Bowie, and Greg Dyke who was BBC director general at the time said 'you are a huge Bowie fan aren't you?' and I said 'yeah'.

"So he said 'do you want to meet him?' and I said OK.

"So there i s me, Greg Dyke and Salman Rushdie with David.

"He says 'Hello Salman' and then Greg says 'this is Ricky' and David says 'hello, nice to meet you, what do you do?'. He didn't know who I was.

"Then about a couple of weeks later I got an email from David Bowie. He obviously got my email and didn't know who I was but now did know.

"He went 'I just watched The Office. I laughed. What do I do now?'.

"So we became sort of pen pals.

"On his 57th birthday I wrote '57, isn't it about time you got a proper job? Ricky Gervais, comedian, 42'.

"He sent back 'I have a proper job. David Bowie, Rock god."

Speaking in New York to promote his comedy drama Derek being released on Netflix across the world , Gervais also revealed plans for a stand up tour in 2014 called Humanity and said he works best gathering material when running or on a plane because there are no distractions.

He said: "I love doing stand up and I love it more and more as it goes along. You can never perfect it, in your head you could always do it better.

"Stand up is evolution over 100 gigs, the audience chooses what they like.

"It [the tour] always gets put back, I have to make sure I have six months free and something always comes along, TV or film. But the short answer is I can't wait.

"I even have a title and a big bag of post it notes, it is caused Humanity.

"I haven't even done a warm up but I definitely want to do some next year."

Fans also saw the first clip of him as an all sing ing all dancing star of the new Muppets film which sees him reprise the Brent dance but also singing alongside Kermit lookalike Constantine as the duo tries to steal the crown jewels of England.

After showing a trailer, Gervais said: "This is top secret, I don't know if I am even supposed to be saying this, but I am a master criminal, I am the second greatest criminal. The first greatest criminal is a Russian frog, but we are in this together infiltrating the Muppets."

Gervais also insisted he would not sign a golden handcuffs deal with any TV channel or online site and preferred to move around saying: "I'm no ones b*tch!"
