Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth officially call off their engagement

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have officially called off their engagement.

Rumours surrounding the pair's relationship have been circulating recently but speculation reached fever pitch when former Disney star Miley unfollowed Australian actor Liam on Twitter last week.

And now a representative for Miley has confirmed her relationship with Liam is over after almost four years.

The pair first met on the set of 2010 movie The Last Song and got engaged in May 2012.

Announcing the happy news to People, who initially confirmed the most recent split news, Miley said: "I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam."

However, Miley and Liam faced a rocky road and postponed their wedding earlier this year with Miley later being spotted without her 3.5-carat Neil Lane engagement ring.

The pair were last seen together on August 8 this year on the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of Liam's film Paranoia.

Liam was also absent while Miley put on her controversial performance with fellow singer Robin Thicke at the MTV VMAs the same month before she jetted off to Europe to promote her new album Bangerz while ex Liam was in Las Vegas watching a Floyd Mayweather fight.

When asked about her wedding plans recently, Miley didn't seem too open on the matter but didn't suggest she and Liam were splitting and told fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar: "I definitely don't have time to deal with a wedding right now. But I will at some point."

A representative for Miley did not offer further comment.
