Because Victoria Beckham really piled on the lbs over Christmas...*
The size four fashionista has finally revealed the secret of how she maintains her uber-svelte frame: the Alkaline Diet.
Posh, who has about as much meat on her as the average Nandoâs chicken wing, has apparently become a devotee of low acidity, vegetarian nosh.
While the Atkins diet was so 2004, the South Beach diet 2007 and Dukan 2011, this year is all about the Alkaline.
Joining celeb fans including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Kirsten Dunst, the Spice Girl-turned-designer got into the righteous regime after being given a copy of a £20 cookbook.
Called Honestly Healthy, VB has tweeted her appreciation of the 106-recipe tome, attaching a link to it and writing: âLove this healthy eating cookbook.â
While one of the benefits of the diet â" the idea of which is to achieve an âoptimal pH balanceâ in the body â" is weight loss, it is also said to boast many other health benefits.
Alternative medicine practitioners use principles of the diet â" mainly that dairy, meat and grains should be avoided â" and believe it can help treat heart disease, low energy levels and allergies.
A low-acid food plan can also aid the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Apparently.
On the plan, 70% of what Victoria would eat is alkaline and the remaining 30 acid.
This means a diet high in fibre from fruit, vegetables and wholegrains which help cleanse the digestive tract.
As well as drinking lots of water â" supermodel Miranda Kerr recently revealed drinking only water alkalised by a special filter â" core foods include spinach (raw), sprouts, nuts (apart from peanuts and cashews), avocado, broccoli, coldwater fish and olive and linseed oils.
Banned foodstuffs are: sugar, fizzy drinks, pasta, white rice, condiments (yep, ketchup), caffeine and meat. Urrrgh.
Honestly Healthy, written by Vicki Edgso n and organic chef (and Kelly Hoppenâs daughter Natasha Corrett), promises to relieve headaches, bloating, muscle pain and insomnia. Recipes include quinoa porridge with macadamia nut milk, a pak choi, papaya and flax seed green smoothie and sweet potato chocolate brownies.
No one said being Posh was easy.
*Sarcasm alert.
