Jodie Foster sort of stole the Golden Globes show by sort of coming out in a long, breathless and rambling speech at the ceremony's 70th bash last night.
Foster was on stage as this year's winner of the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, which had been announced previously.
But her acceptance speech was anything but predictable as the Panic Room star seized control of the boozy ballroom by making it clear that she had something important to say.
The private 50-year-old Oscar-winner was initially bashful, joking that she had a big announcement that would make her publicist nervous.
Then she stated: "I'm just going to put it out there, loud and proud," before pausing for dramatic effect... "I am, uh, single."
"I hope you're not disappointed that there won't be a big coming-out speech tonight. I already did my coming-out about a thousand years ago."
Â
She continued to half-joke that celebrities are now expected to reveal they are gay "with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show. ... You just might be surprised but I am not Honey Boo Boo Child. Please don't cry, because my reality show is so boring."
"If you had been a public figure since you were a toddler, maybe you'd value privacy above all else, too," she added defiantly.
Foster also thanked Cydney Bernard, identifying her former film producer partner of 20 years with whom she has two sons, 14-year-old Charles, and Kit, 12. Her mother was also in attendance.
But the star, who was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar in 1976 at the age of 13 for her role in Taxi Driver, also made it sound as if she planned to retire from acting.
However, she later clarified for reporters: "No. Not really. I think it stands for itself and it's an expression of who I am and what I'm thinking and feeling."
Her barely-cry ptic speech was unsurprisingly an immediate topic of interest for Twitter users, with several film and entertainment types offering their take on Foster's words.
